Professional Licensure

Important Note for Prospective Students: If considering an academic program that leads to a professional license in your planned state of residence, it is highly recommended that you first seek guidance from the appropriate licensing agency in that state BEFORE beginning the academic program located outside that state. South College provides information during the enrollment or orientation process (which you must acknowledge receipt of), but it is important to follow-up yourself by contacting the appropriate licensing board to confirm whether a South College program will meet the requirements for licensure in that state). For onground/hybrid programs, the institution ensures that the program meets requirements for the state in which the campus is located.

Relocation to Another State

Students who consider moving to another state during their enrollment at South College must meet with their academic advisor and the financial aid department prior to this move in order to discuss consequences of this move.  Consideration of these consequences is very important and could include loss of eligibility for federal student aid or, if applicable, rescheduling of clinical or other rotations if the move is to a state in which the institution is not authorized if required for a program or where clinical agreements are not established.  The student should contact the appropriate licensing board in his/her new home state to confirm whether a South College program will meet the requirements for licensure in that state.

(ARC-PA) has granted Accredited-Continued status to the South College Nashville, Master of Health Science in Physician Assistant Studies Program sponsored by South College. Accreditation-Continued is an accreditation status granted when a currently accredited program is in compliance with ARC-PA Standards. Accreditation remains in effect until the program closes or withdraws from the accreditation process or until accreditation is withdrawn for failure to comply with the Standards. The approximate date for the next validation review of the program by the ARC-PA will be March 2034. The review date is contingent upon continued compliance with the Accreditation Standards and ARC-PA policy. The program’s accreditation history can be viewed on the ARC-PA website at https://www.arc-pa.org/accreditation-history-south-college-nashville/.

The ARC-PA has granted Accreditation-Provisional status to the South College Asheville Master of Health Science in Physician Assistant Program sponsored by South College.  Accreditation-Provisional is an accreditation status granted when the plans and resource allocation, if fully implemented as planned, of a proposed program that has not yet enrolled students appear to demonstrate the program’s ability to meet the ARC-PA Standards or when a program holding Accreditation-Provisional status appears to demonstrate continued progress in complying with the Standards as it prepares for the graduation of the first class (cohort) of students.  Accreditation-Provisional does not ensure any subsequent accreditation status. It is limited to no more than five years from matriculation of the first class.  The program’s accreditation history can be viewed on the ARC-PA website at http://www.arc-pa.org/accreditation-history-south-college-asheville/

Candidacy is considered to be an accredited status, as such the credits and degree earned from a program with Candidacy status are considered, by CAPTE, to be from an accredited program. Therefore, students in the charter (first) class should be eligible to take the licensure exam even if CAPTE withholds accreditation at the end of the candidacy period. That said, it is up to each state licensing agency, not CAPTE, to determine who is eligible for licensure. Information on licensing requirements should be directed to the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy (FSBPT; www.fsbpt.org) or specific state boards (a list of state boards and contact information is available on FSBPT’s website).

The developing physical therapy program at South College, Nashville campus is planning for a charter class graduation in September 2026. Initial accreditation decisions are acted upon at the next regularly scheduled Fall Meeting of the Commission following the on-site visit, which must occur during the penultimate term when the charter class is enrolled. CAPTE will not make exceptions to its Rules to accommodate graduation dates that precede regularly scheduled CAPTE meeting dates, e.g., graduation in the summer. A summer graduation does not allow the initial accreditation decision to occur prior to the graduation date. The Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy (FSBPT) sets the dates for licensing exams. The first sitting for which students with an September graduation date would be in January. Therefore, the timing of the planned graduation date increases the likelihood of a significant financial disadvantage for students due to an approximate six-month delay in possible employment as a physical therapist.
