Health Science (Pre-Nursing), AS


Overview

The Associate of Science degree program in Health Science is designed to provide students interested in healthcare a broad educational experience. The Health Science option provides a degree avenue for many practicing healthcare professionals including surgical technologists, paramedics, pharmacy technicians, and medical office professionals. This program does not qualify graduates to apply to sit for any NCLEX examination as this is a pre-nursing program. The Pre-Nursing option is designed for those wishing to pursue admittance to a Bachelor of Science in Nursing program. The Pre-Pharmacy option is designed for those seeking admittance to a Doctor of Pharmacy program. The curriculum requires completion of a variety of general education courses, as well as foundational courses in anatomy and physiology, biology, and chemistry. With completion of this program, students may choose to continue their education to a specific health professional area or pursue entry-level health care positions. Example positions include chemical technicians, food science technician, pharmaceutical sales, and biological technicians. Only courses in which a C or better is earned will count toward graduation requirements.

Admission Requirements

All students must minimally meet the requirements for general admission to South College. General admission to South College does not guarantee program admission. Program admission is not granted until the following is met.

  • Successful completion of 8 hours in the major curriculum at South College, earning the minimum grades required by the program.
     

The Associate of Science in Health Science (Pre-Nursing) degree program is offered at the Asheville, Atlanta, Dallas*, Knoxville, Marietta, Nashville, Indianapolis, and Orlando campuses (Hybrid) and Online.

*The South College Dallas Campus has made application for implementation of an Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) program with the Texas Board of Nursing (TXBON) as its first nursing program. Once approval for this program is received and the first major class graduates and has outcomes, the campus plans to apply for implementation of a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). The timeline for this BSN application is not known at this time and will be determined over the next several months. 

It is possible that at the time of completing the AS Health Science (Pre-Nursing) program at the South College Dallas Campus, the BSN program may not be yet be approved and implemented.  Depending upon your future goals, you may choose to seek professional opportunities in healthcare. You may choose to wait until the BSN is implemented, you may choose apply to the BSN program offered at another South College physical campus which would require relocation, or you may choose to apply to a BSN program at another institution. 

AS Health Science (Pre-Nursing) Curriculum: 92 Credits
