Overview  

The Post-Baccalaureate Pre-Medical/Health Professions Certificate program at South College is committed to advancing educational opportunities for those students who have completed a baccalaureate degree. This program is aimed at developing and enriching the academic knowledge base and skills of students prior to their application into medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, veterinary medicine, and other health programs. A bachelor’s degree is a requirement for admission to these programs. Only courses in which a C or better is earned will count toward graduation requirements.

Mission  

The mission of the Post-Baccalaureate Pre-Medical/Health Professions Certificate program is to provide a curriculum that balances theoretical and practical coursework that further develops the critical thinking and analytical skills needed in today’s competitive and evolving work environments. Students will be challenged through coursework in anatomy and physiology, biology, general chemistry, organic chemistry, biochemistry, genetics, immunology, pathophysiology, and physics.  

Program Learning Outcomes

Student Learning Outcome #1

The program seeks to provide students with additional coursework to further develop their knowledge, and understanding of foundational theories, concepts, and principles.

  1. Students will demonstrate comprehension of key science principles related to required courses.
  2. Students will demonstrate an understanding of identified basic science course objectives learned in core science courses.

Student Learning Outcome #2

The program seeks to provide theoretical and practical coursework that further develops the critical thinking and analytical skills needed in a competitive graduate program and work environment.

  1. Students will demonstrate proficiency in using scientific tools, techniques, and equipment.
  2. Students will apply critical thinking, analytical reasoning, and problem-solving skills to analyze data in lab courses.
  3. Students will be able to synthesize, integrate, and analyze data in science lab courses.
  4. Students will demonstrate effective communication skills.

Student Learning Outcome # 3

The program seeks to provide students with the academic knowledge, skills, and tools to enable them to be successful in graduate program studies.

  1. Students will demonstrate an ability to synthesize and integrate information learned in various science courses.

Admission Requirements

Applicants interested in the Post-Baccalaureate Pre-Medical/Health Professions Certificate program are required to meet individually with an admissions representative and program faculty to ascertain if their goals can be met by the college. Prospective students must be generally admitted to South College and meet the following requirements in order to be considered for full admission to the program:

  1. Provide evidence of completion of bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
