Phlebotomy Technician, Certificate

Overview

The Certificate in Phlebotomy Technician program requires successful completion of 6.0 total quarter credit hours and is designed to be completed in one quarter. Students will participate in an integrated learning experience designed to develop the knowledge, skills, values, and competencies needed to develop a basic knowledge and competencies related to collection of blood and non-blood specimens for human laboratory analysis. Students will be eligible to sit for the national phlebotomy technician certification examination upon successful completion of the coursework.

Student Learning Outcomes

Graduates of this program of study will:

  • Perform blood collection by venipuncture and capillary puncture to obtain high quality specimens for clinical laboratory analysis.
  • Explain the function and structure of the capillaries, veins and arteries, and identify the names and locations of the veins suitable for venous and capillary blood collections, as well as describe the anatomy and physiology of body systems to the extent needed to related basic laboratory tests to common pathologic conditions.
  • Demonstrate safe and effective use of equipment and supplies used for blood collection and specimen transport.
  • Demonstrate safe and aseptic technique and infection control measures in the laboratory environment.
  • Recognize factors that affect procedures and results, and taking appropriate actions within predetermined limits when corrections are indicated.
  • Collect and process blood specimens in a safe manner and according to laboratory protocol and HIPAA regulations.
  • Demonstrate proper patient identification and assure quality of specimens.
  • Demonstrate a knowledge of government and industry standards related to the collection of blood.
  • Use effective written and oral communication when interacting with patients and other healthcare workers to improve patient care.
  • Demonstrate professional conduct and interpersonal communication skills with patients, laboratory personnel, other health care professionals, and with the public.
  • Recognize the responsibilities of other laboratory and health care personnel and interact with them with respect for their jobs and patient care.
  • Evaluate and demonstrate knowledge in the legal implications of phlebotomy.
  • Demonstrate professional conduct and appearance.

Admission Requirements

All students must minimally meet the requirements for general admission to South College. General admission to South College does not guarantee admission to the Phlebotomy Technician program. Program admission is not granted until the following is met.

  • Applicant must be 18+ years of age.
  • Applicant must understand that live blood draws and capillary punctures will be performed on students in the classroom.
  • Applicants must pass a background check and drug screen test.

Functional Capacities (Technical Standards)

Applicants to the Certificate in Phlebotomy Technician program must be able to meet the following functional capacities. Students who believe that they will not be able to meet one or more of these requirements without accommodation or modification must notify the Program Director/MA Department Chair, and a determination will be made on a case-by-case basis whether reasonable accommodation may be made. Accommodations granted when a student is generally admitted to South College does not guarantee that this modification will apply to admission to the Certificate in Phlebotomy Technician program.

Vision

Adequate to ensure safety of self and others in medical clinical settings.

  • Should be able to select appropriate site for venipuncture, assemble equipment, and collect specimen(s) using correct order of draw and according to policy and procedure.
  • Should be able to read printed words on paper, numbers, lettering, writing on instruments, and computer screens. 
  • Should possess sufficient visual acuity to perform close and distant visual activities involving objects, persons, and paperwork.
  • Should have visual ability to distinguish gradients of colors.  Should be able to identify reagents and other materials, such as laboratory media, stain preparations and various body fluids with or without corrective devices.

Hearing

Adequate and effective communication with others in close proximity (3 feet) and remote areas (15 feet).

  • Should be able to verbally communicate with patients, clinical staff, and others.
  • Should be able to have telephone communication and conversation with patients and staff.
  • Should be able to respond to beepers and overhead announcements.
  • Should be able to respond and react immediately to verbal instructions and requests.

 Gross motor strength and  coordination

Adequate to allow effective mobility of self, equipment, and people.

  • Should be able to work in a standing position for long hours.
  • Should be able to physically maneuver within patient collection areas to collect specimens.
  • Should be able to use hands, wrists, and arms to move objects up to 50 lbs.

Fine motor strength and coordination

Adequate to allow use of clinical equipment, maintaining a safe environment for patients and others.

  • Dexterity and fine motor skills to perform blood collection and specimen manipulation.
  • Good eye hand coordination and steady hand.
  • Sufficient manual dexterity to operate all clinical equipment related to patient care.
  • Should be able to handle sharp instruments with dexterity as well as pinching, grasping, and manipulating instruments and equipment.

  • Should be able to demonstrate safe and effective use of equipment and supplies used for blood collection and specimen transport.

  • Should be able to perform Phlebotomy procedures with speed and accuracy in changing, distracting, and/or stressful environments.
  • Should have the ability to work effectively independently and/or with supervision.
