Overview

The Bachelor of Science in Health Science (Post-RT) program at South College is committed to advancing educational opportunities for those students who have completed an associate level respiratory therapy (RT) degree. Currently, there are limited opportunities nation-wide for students who have earned the RT degree to have their major curriculum credits earned in an RT program count toward a bachelor’s degree. Students may desire to earn a bachelor’s degree to enhance their marketability for administrative positions in respiratory therapy or health care environments or teaching positions in allied health education programs.

Learning Outcomes

Student Learning Outcome #1

The program seeks to provide students with additional coursework to further develop their knowledge, and understanding of foundational theories, concepts, and principles.

1. Students will demonstrate comprehension of key science principles related to required courses.
2. Students will demonstrate an understanding of identified basic science course objectives learned in core science courses.

Student Learning Outcome #2

The program seeks to provide theoretical and practical coursework that further develops the critical thinking and analytical skills needed in a competitive and evolving work environment.

1. Students will be able to synthesize, integrate, and analyze research in health science literature in selected science courses.
2. Students will demonstrate an understanding of health law and ethics principles applied to various issues facing the healthcare system, individuals, and society.
3. Students will demonstrate effective written and oral communication skills.

Student Learning Outcome # 3

The program seeks to provide students with the academic knowledge, skills, and tools to enable them to be successful in graduate program studies and enhance their marketability for administrative positions in occupational therapy or health care environments.

1. Students will demonstrate an understanding of the trans-disciplinary workplace and issues in health care fields and the environment.
2. Students will demonstrate an understanding of administrative theories, methods, tasks, decision-making, management, and leadership functions.

Admission Requirements

Applicants interested in the Bachelor of Science in Health Science (Post-RT) program are required to meet individually with an admissions representative and program faculty to ascertain if their goals can be met by the college. Prospective students declaring this program as their major must be generally admitted to South College and meet the following requirements in order to be considered for full admission to the program:

1. Submit a completed South College Application for admission and be in active student status.
2. Provide evidence of completion of AS RT degree from an accredited institution with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5.
3. Satisfactory minimum core courses/credits are required to have been met in the associate degree program. In the case that these requirements were not met, the student is required to complete these requirements.
